Medtronic has acquired Fortimedix Surgical, a Dutch innovator known for developing highly responsive, flexible instruments enabling minimally invasive and endoscopic procedures. The financial terms remain undisclosed, but the move strengthens Medtronic’s portfolio as it gears up to advance its Hugo soft tissue robotic system.
Fortimedix, which shifted its focus from its Symphonx surgery system to cutting-edge articulating instruments, is transforming surgical practices. Its tools allow non-invasive procedures through natural openings, reducing trauma and recovery time. CEO Wout Bijker highlighted how these instruments, paired with surgical robots, could revolutionize treatments like esophageal cancer by eliminating the need for traditional multi-incision surgeries.
Medtronic’s CEO Geoff Martha emphasized the company’s focus on “high-growth markets” and strategic acquisitions. This purchase aligns with its push for innovation, particularly as it approaches a critical 2025 milestone for its Hugo robot in urology procedures.
